PRESS RELEASE
The final supply ship of the year will soon depart. But has Naalakkersuisut ensured a reliable electricity supply in Tasiilaq throughout the winter? Lars Poulsen, Member of Inatsisartut for Siumut, is now demanding a clear answer from Naalakkersuisoq for Energy, Jørgen Rosbach.
“Families, elderly residents, businesses and public institutions in Tasiilaq must have a stable electricity supply. It is unacceptable for residents to face the prospect of power outages as winter approaches. Naalakkersuisoq Jørgen Rosbach must take responsibility and provide evidence that the electricity supply is secure,” says Lars Poulsen.
As early as February 2022, Lars Poulsen submitted a proposal to Inatsisartut to expand the hydropower plant in Tasiilaq. However, the expansion has since been put on hold. The 2026 Finance Act agreement also acknowledged that Tasiilaq’s electricity supply is unstable and that urgent improvements are needed.
“This is not a new problem. Naalakkersuisut is already well aware of the situation. Plans and promises are therefore not enough. Residents deserve a clear explanation of how their electricity supply will be secured throughout the winter. Postponing the expansion of the power plant is an abdication of responsibility for ensuring a reliable electricity supply.”
Lars Poulsen is calling on Naalakkersuisut to disclose, as a matter of urgency, whether sufficient backup generators are available, whether the necessary fuel and spare parts are in place, and what emergency contingency plans will be implemented in the event of a power failure.
“Once the final supply ship of the year has departed, the options for taking action will become increasingly limited. That is why Naalakkersuisoq Jørgen Rosbach must answer now: Is Tasiilaq prepared for a winter with a secure electricity supply? Naalakkersuisut must prioritise the safety and peace of mind of residents. Urgent action is needed before the situation deteriorates,” concludes Lars Poulsen.
