Siumut was founded as a political party on 28, 29 and 30 July 1977 in Upernaviarsuk, near Qaqortoq. Siumut is a political movement firmly rooted in the broader Greenlandic population. The movement laid the foundation for organised opposition to the Danish State’s colonialism in Greenland.
Siumut’s ideological foundation is not based on the idea of a particular, permanently fixed structure of society.
It is based on a view grounded in human rights and on the idea of a society of free, active and cooperative citizens – a fully realised political and economic democracy characterised by social justice, equality, free opportunities for cultural expression and unrestricted opportunities for initiative, all of which contribute to creating a foundation for a positive view of humanity.
The willingness to cooperate and engage in dialogue with others is something we attach particularly great importance to. In this way, compromises can be reached in government policy and in society, thereby avoiding unnecessary and heated exchanges of opinion.
Having clear objectives while maintaining a willingness to compromise along the way serves the same purpose. In addition, we attach great importance to democracy prevailing among our members.
A political movement with many supporters, firmly rooted principles and well-defined objectives has precisely the strength needed to facilitate cooperation with others.
Siumut’s objective is to create a welfare-based society, a collective society that is adaptable, has the capacity for development, respects the environment, makes use of what nature has to offer, and participates actively in the global community as part of the international community.

Siumut’s fundamental ideology is based on democratic socialism. Siumut’s aim is to liberate the individual, ensure their security and give them the opportunity to determine their own life freely, while acting responsibly towards themselves, the community and nature, and at the same time taking responsibility for future generations.
Human dignity must be respected. We therefore safeguard the rule of law and fundamental human rights.
Every citizen must have the right to participate in decisions concerning their everyday life and the organisation of society at all levels. We want a society that reaches out to everyone and a society that has a place and a need for everyone, from every section of society.
Siumut is strongly committed to the demand for personal freedom, the demand for opportunities in the labour market, the demand for a fair economic policy, and equality in access to society’s economic benefits for all.
